Mini Rant: Gerald Harris Cut By The UFC

Gerald Harris was cut by the UFC today after his loss to Maiquel Falcao. I am sad for Gerald because he is an incredibly likable guy.

However, I am not surprised he got cut and nor should anyone else be. The UFC has the premiere roster of fighters. Every single division is stacked with a stable of fighters any other organization would saw their collective balls off with a plastic spoon to have under contract. Especially after the merger and all the new employees that puts in the Ultimate Fighting Championship you have to go out there and perform every single time. There is no room to slack off and there is no reason to coast.

Gerald Harris was cut in my opinion not because he lost but because of the way he lost. Aside from some early activity he essentially stood in front of Falcao and waved "hello" with his left hand for a large portion of that fight. I am well aware of the fact that he was probably hurt from the blitz of strikes in the first round and the devastating submission he was in at the conclusion of round 2 and certainly that played a part in it.

At the start of round 3 Gerald was down 2 rounds. He needed a finish to win the fight. He didn't do anything to win that fight. He stood and circled and that was it. Falcao broke him and he gave up. If you are down 2 rounds and you have 5 minutes left to stage a comeback you had better try. Don't go out there and be inactive. Go out with guns blazing and act like winning the fight means something to you.

The only thing that can end your UFC run other than losses is inactivity. All out effort is second only to wins. Don't be surprised to see a lot more cuts just like this in the future.
