Did You Know There Was A Strikeforce Event On Saturday?

I didn't. I knew there was one coming up but due to the a lack of press attention this event has essentially flown under the radar. This is the event with Strikeforce's most marketable match up headlining the card but it seems like no one cares. The undercard, like most Strikeforce events is very underwhelming, with only three fights announced for the non-televised portion.

The first fight is a mixed gender match with some broad named Jess Bouscal taking on Luis Mendoza. This is a match between a dude and a chick right? No dudes are named Jess right? I dunno. I've never heard of either of these fighters. I'm picking the dude though, I guess? The next fight, a matchup between 9-3 Eric Lawson and 5-2 Ron Keslar. Both are coming off of losses and neither has had a big win. Keslar has been more active with his last fight on the Fedor/Werdum card. Finally the last announced bout of the undercard is between James Terry and Bret Bergmark. Bergmark likes to fight once every two years so him fighting twice in 2010 is a wild. Seriously though, since none of these fighters are well known and most have fought on the Challenger's series, can anyone really say that event is used to develop talent? I can't.

The main card is essentially a high end Challengers show with a real Strikeforce main event. Tyrone Woodley takes on Andre Galvao. Galvao has been very underwhelming in his MMA career and hasn't shown an ability to take the fight to the ground. Woodley is one of the top prospects at welterweight. He has a strong wrestling game and decent striking. I expect Woodley to dominate the Brazilian prospect to a TKO victory.

Josh Thomson takes on JZ in a battle of the could have beens. At one point Josh Thomson was considered the top American lightweight. His opponent, JZ can make a similar claim as potentially being considered the top Brazilian lightweight. Both have showed a ton of potential but have always fallen short when offered the opportunity to take that big step forward and claim the mantle of top lightweight. It will be an interesting fight for the number one contender for Gil Melendez's title if a fight with Eddie Alvarez doesn't take place.

Sarah "Ugly Broad" Kaufman takes on Marloes "Prettier than Sarah Kaufman" Coenen for the 135 lb belt. Sarah Kaufman is best known as being an incredibly boring fighter who complains about not being put on Strikeforce cards in which ratings matter. Coenen is a good looking Danish gal who got beat up by Cyborg. To say I am not interested in this fight would be understatement. To say this is going to be the worst fight of the year is overstatement. I'm just hoping for a statement.

Finally the night is capped with Nick Diaz taking on KJ Noons at some weight. I dunno what they are thinking to be honest. You have a 155 fighter taking on a fighter who has fought as high as 183 and is the current welterweight champ? What's the gain? This is where I start to think that Scott Coker is partially retarded, not sure how much though. Nick Diaz's excuse for not selling this fight is that he's not getting paid enough to do so. He also says he's currently broke. Which doesn't make sense. KJ Noons is getting closer and closer to looking like Christian Bale in American Psycho. But he's also fighting Nick Diaz at Nick's natural class.

So that's Strikeforce: We Have An Event On Saturday. Hope you tune in for the card. I will not be as I will instead be getting tattoos with my bicycle gang who are visiting from Jersey.

Fiesta Forever!!!

  2. Strikeforce sucks at what they do, but is still the best thing to happen to MMA since Brock showed up. They've put on a lot of great shows that nobody saw, but they're still giving fighters options and exposure.

The talent pool is growing each day yet they still can't seem to promote a decent fight. Sure, they have plenty of match ups to promote now, but something just isn't connecting. We're not seeing the fights we could be. Even when we do get a great match up, the company fails miserably in promoting it.

For the last month, Sowtime and SF should have been replaying footage of the brawl 3 years ago. Everyone with a subscription should know who Sarah Kauffman is, the crazy bitch who powerbombs people. If SF had me marketing they'd be doing better. And that's turrible because I'm an idiot.
